By WordPress | November 20, 2008
It looks like the bicycle season is quickly coming to an end in Michigan. Here’s a video I did for the Free Press last night on the Bike the Lights 10 miler at the Wayne County Lightfest.

Bike through the Lights
By admin | November 2, 2008
Mark down Wednesday Nov. 19. Try to get out of work a bit earlier that day and join me at Merriman Hollow Park, on Hines Drive off Merriman Road between Ann Arbor Trail and Warren Avenue in Westland, for the Bike Through The Lights ride.
The ride starts at 7 pm. Check in is at 5:30 pm. It’s not a long ride, to and from the Warrendale Picnic Area. That’s 16K or about 10 miles.
But it’s the atmosphere that draws us. The road is cleared for bikes only. And it offers a sneak peek at the beautiful Hines Drive Christmas Lightfest, which officially opens the next night.
The idea for bikers is to decorate their bikes.
I’m been geeked about this ever sinde ride buddy Pat Benson told me about it the other day. I’ll even do a video for the Free Press as I ride. But I need some help here. How do you put lights on a bike? Any and all ideas appreciated.Where do I get lights? How do I poer them?
Let me know under comments if you can make this. You can grab a pdf flyer about the event here.

Apple Orchard Trail open to Richmond
By WordPress | November 1, 2008
The forecast was sunshine and temps in the fifties so for riding buddy Pat Benson and me… that was all the excuse we needed. (Click on any of the photos for a larger view.)
We rode the Apple Orchard Trail, which is now fully open. We crossed the amazing new super duper bridge over the M-53 freeway and made it all the way to Richmond, ignoring a stretch of trail still officially marked as closed as they finish some work on a wooden bridge, but more than solid enough for easy travel.
The weather was in the 40’s with a very stiff headwind and I immediately regretted not wearing long gloves. And in my haste to start riding, I forgot my sunglasses. Glad the summer’s bugs are long gone. I did, though, run over a couple of sleepy snakes trying to get warm on the asphalt. No, it wasn’t intentional. They were small and I didn’t see them till it was too late. They were all stretched out, looking like sticks or twigs until I rolled over them.
About 45 minutes later my numb fingers had thawed out and we began to enjoy the day. North of M-53, the pavement gives way to crushed gravel and there were a few soft spots, made hard to spot because of the thick carpet of leaves that covered the trail in many spots.
I also forgot water. I know. Dumb.
But we made it to the end in Richmond, marked by a brick arch and a gazebo.
It was a great out and back ride.
The official distance of the trail appears to be 23 miles. That’s 46 round trip and many more if you connect to either the Paint Creek or Clinton River Trails. We started at 30 mile Rd. this morning, giving us about a 32 mile ride. It was harder than either of us expected. Guess the summer’s training is wearing off with the curtailed riding over the past month. The headwind and loose gravel didn’t help.
But we loved every minute of it anyway.
Hoping for a few more similar ride before the snow and ice.

Will Cheap Oil sink the Bike Boom?
By admin | November 1, 2008
Gasoline at $4 per gallon did wonders for promoting bikes as a lean and green solution. The price of oil has dropped 55% since July. Local gas prices are “falling like leaves.” Daylight is getting more scarce and the temperatures are dropping. All these factors might mean more bike commuters will be hopping back into their cars.

Failing to Assess Risks on the Road
By WordPress | October 31, 2008
“How We Drive” is a real interesting blog that more about roads users and transportation than just driving. A recent entry is very relevant to bicyclists. It discusses how many drivers do not accurately assess the risks of their driving behavior. They take chances that most of the time don’t result in a crash or injury. Examples could include passing cyclists too closely on the road , crossing a double-yellow line to pass cyclists, or pulling through a crosswalk without looking for pedestrians.

Dequindre Trail Plans
By admin | October 31, 2008
Here are the preliminary plans for the Dequindre Trail which connects the Dequindre Cut to Tri-Centennial State Park and the Riverwalk. Note that the trail has more hard surfaces compared with the nearby Dequindre Cut and state park. This was done since this segment is expected to have more pedestrian traffic. That is, of course, after the surrounding East Riverfront residential units are developed and occupied

Rendering of the new public dock and terminal under construction along the Riverwalk Tuesday, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy (DRC) hosted a public forum on the Riverwalk and Dequindre Cut . This is the first in a series of public meetings. Some of the highlights – The Dequindre Cut grand opening is scheduled for May 2009. By WordPress | October 28, 2008
Climate Cycle is the epic adventure of a young school teacher and a train worker from Oxford.
After teaching her pupils about global warming, Lowanna decided she couldn’t risk damaging the climate by flying home to Australia. With her partner Kevin, the couple travel the 12,000km to Sydney using only sustainable transport- the train, bicycle and cargo ship.
Pedalling through 16 countries over 485 days, the couple joined in Car Free day in Italy, escaped arrest in Iran, got groped in Pakistan and fell ill in India. Their journey brought them through storm ravaged forests in France, torrential downpours in the Mediterranean and severe drought in Iran. Read the rest of this entry »
