Teaching Your Dog Swimming pool Safety

My dog loves to swim, he's a black lab and it comes naturally to him. He's loved the water ever since he was a puppy. Some dogs either don't like water or are afraid of it. In another article I might talk about how to get your dog to love water but today I wanted to teach you about the right way your dog should exit a swimming pool and also train you on how to train your dog to do so.

First things first, dogs need to know the right way to exit a swimming pool because if they don't they could drown. When a dog tries to exit the swimming pool from anywhere but the stairs of the pool then they are in danger of hurting themselves and also drowning.

Say your dog is trying to get out of the pool from the side and can't which is the case with most dogs because it's very difficult to do, and nobody is around. Your dog won't have the intelligence to find the stairs because...
  • He does not know where they are
  • He will try the same action over and over again like jumping from the side of the pool trying to get out because dogs are not very intelligent and are not capable of rational thinking like humans so after a while they will exhaust themselves and drown.
Because of this it's important to train your dog to know where the stairs are in a pool and also train your dog to always and only use the stairs when getting out of the swimming pool.

How To Train Your Dog To Use The Swimming Pool Steps

Your dog will follow you when he's in the pool and your not. If he doesn't follow you then you can make him by holding his favorite toy and leading him around the pool. Once you get him following you then your job is to exploit this behavior for your own benefit and ultimately the dogs as well.

So once you have your dog following you all you have to do is lead him towards the stairs and make him get out of the pool. You can say a command like get out or out once he is on his way out and then praise or give him a treat.

Repeat this until your dog can get out of the pool only using the stairs once you say the command out. That way your dog will learn not only where the stairs are in your swimming pool but also that it's important he use them. This will secure his safety when he's out in the yard by himself and a ball rolls in the pool.

It's that simple. So take action and go out there and teach your dog to use the steps in your pool. Any dog training is good and this is actually an important thing to teach your dog. Good luck and God bless.
