Charity Reveals Tips to Help Cash-Strapped Pet Owners Save Money

Please share a little of what you can and give a small donation to help Save the dogs just click on the donate button here and help to buy food for these street dogs for Christmas who need food and shelter. You can make a difference so get into the Christmas spirit and give. Here are some tips to all those who are finding it difficult to keep their dogs during this hard time...
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is today launching top tips to help cash-strapped pet owners care for their dogs and cats during the credit crunch. The world-famous dog and cat rescue organisation has taken the step in response to concerns that people may be worried about the cost of keeping a pet in the current economic climate. The tips will be available to visitors to the Home and at www.battersea.org.uk.

Scott Craddock, Director of Operations at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, said:

“We know that some people are worried about the cost of keeping cats and dogs at the moment. These tips should give people some help on how to look after a dog or cat on a budget.”

The tips include advice on food, vet bills and toys.

Ali Taylor, Head of Animal Welfare Training at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, said:

“You don’t have to spend a fortune on your dog to keep him fit and healthy. Buying a complete* dry food rather than tins of dog food is a good starting point. If you buy it in large quantities it will work out even cheaper. Insurance is always a good idea to avoid nasty surprises with vet bills.”

Kirsty Walker, Head of Cats at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, said:

“Car boot sales and charity shops are a good place to start looking for cat ‘essentials’, and can be very cheap.”

She continued:

“Cats also really like to snuggle down with a blanket for a sleep in a cardboard box, so you really don’t need to spend a fortune on expensive beds as your cat won’t know the difference.”

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has not seen a large increase in people bringing their animals into the Home because they can’t afford to keep them. It has however seen a significant rise in stray dogs, which it believes is partly due to the credit crunch*.

———–

*A complete dry diet means that all the nutrients the dog needs for the day are provided by the dry food. Consult a veterinary professional for further advice.

*The increase in stray dogs into the Home is also believed to be due to the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act which means that stray dogs are no longer kept at police stations. They are now collected by Local Authority dog wardens who (in many cases) do not have kennels to keep the dogs, and so bring them straight to the Home. This means that less people are being reunited with their stray dogs outside the Home.

A face-lift for a dog?

SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Is Fido in need of a face-lift?

Go see Edgado Brito, who is advancing the practice of pet plastic surgery in a land with a worldwide reputation for making people beautiful by any means.

Brazilians have long been known for their penchant for cosmetic surgery, and Brito has been adapting those techniques for use on animals.

"Plastic surgery is good for dogs!" said Brito, 45, a Doberman breeder who has worked as a veterinarian for 20 years.

He can make protruding ears droop and uses Metacril to straighten bent ears. He uses Botox to fix inverted eyelashes. He has even tightened the mammillae of a couple of female dogs, whose owners wanted to show them after they had given birth.

Simple surgeries usually cost from about $100 to $200.

In Brazil, the United States and Europe, pet plastic surgery is increasingly in demand, despite objections from animal rights activists and some dog breeders.

The American Kennel Club, which sets the rules for the recognized breeds on the U.S. dog-show circuit, prohibits any surgery that alters a dog's appearance, other than the cropping of ears and tails to meet breed standards.

But the prohibition on surgery is difficult to define and enforce. Two years ago, an award-winning Pekingese in Britain was the subject of an inquiry when rumors swirled that its face had been surgically enhanced. The dog and its owners were acquitted and allowed to keep the award from the 2003 Crufts Dog Show.

In Brazil, Brito keeps abreast of human plastic-surgery trends and attends human surgeries to develop treatments for his pet patients. He's performed thousands of operations.

Brito says animal health is his top concern, but beauty also is important to the animal's well-being. Brito said that if the owner thinks the dog is attractive, the relationship is better.

"Good symmetry is very important," Brito said. "All that is not symmetric we don't like."

One of Brito's more famous patients is Brutus, a miniature schnauzer imported to Brazil from Argentina. He is gray, sleek and muscular and perfectly groomed.

"Brutus was perfect in all details," said his owner Anita Alt, except for one. One ear, thanks to a bad ear job from another veterinarian, flopped open. Fearing infection and hoping to show and breed Brutus, Alt turned to Brito five years ago. The doctor injected a substance used to eliminate human wrinkles into the base of Brutus' ear, which straightened instantly.

"No trauma, and you can see the results immediately," said Alt, who breeds mini schnauzers. Brutus became a grand champion, retired early, and now lives a happy life as a handsome stud in Sao Paulo. Source: News Service

Nothing can stop these Brave little Chihuahuas

These three pups, born without front legs, quickly learned to hop on their back paws. But it was a short-term solution. And now they've got what they really need -- a set of wheels.

"Chihuahuas aren't meant to hop around. Long term, it would lead to spine and hip injuries," Animal League spokesman Devora Lynn told About.com.

Lynn suspects that the dogs fell victim to human misbehavior. "Celebrities have made Chihuahuas a hot commodity, and some breeders are not acting responsibly."

And now the three 11-month-olds -- Venus, Carmen and Pablo -- are learning to steer Chihuahua-sized aluminum wagons, small and light enough for them to push, that will let them lead normal lives.Source: North Shore animal league http://feeds.feedburner.com/dogcents.blogspot.com

'Puppy Cam' Internet Sensation

It takes a village of some 4 million to raise six cuddly pups, or at least to ogle them for hours on end.
What began as a way for a San Francisco couple to keep tabs on their pet Shiba Inu dog Kika’s litter while they were at work has become an unlikely Web sensation. Viewers flock to the Internet site Ustream to monitor the 5-week-old brood’s growth, watching the energetic pups paw and play with one another and have at it with their chew toys.
TODAY peppered its Saturday program with peeks into the puppy’s lair, giving the brood of six their first network exposure outside their spreading fame on the Internet. Speaking via satellite with TODAY’s Lester Holt and Amy Robach, Ustream co-founder Brad Hunstable explained how a private dogsitting webcam became a worldwide phenomenon. Source: Web News

Cold Weather Safety for Your Dog

It's getting colder by the day, but in many parts of the world, the coldest is yet to come. As we change out our wardrobes and get our cars ready for winter, it is important to remember your dog! There are plenty of winter hazards out there. Here are some cold weather tips to help keep your dog safe and warm this winter:

Do not leave your dog outside unsupervised.
Provide a heated bed and shelter for dogs who cannot come indoors.
Get sweaters or jackets for little dogs or dogs with little to no hair.
Watch those feet! If your dog will tolerate it, consider foot protection booties. This can keep your dog safe from objects hidden by the snow, plus prevent slipping on ice and irritated paw pads from salt on surfaces.
When walking your dog near ice, use extra caution and keep your dog close by to avoid slipping. Do not allow your dog to run across frozen bodies of water - he could fall into icy water if the ice is too thin!
If you use a fireplace, keep a safety guard on the front to keep your dog away from the flames and soot. Do not leave a fire unattended.
If your dog is excessively shaking or shivering, get him back to warm shelter as soon as possible.
Avoid letting your dog eat snow - keep fresh room temperature water available at all times.
Beware antifreeze! It is highly toxic! Keep your eyes on your dog at all times - and keep antifreeze out of reach.
Keep food and water in a place where they will not freeze - preferably inside!
Be sure to contact your vet if any signs of illness appear. Also, have a look at the cold weather checklist from the Veterinary Medicine guide. Have fun and stay toasty warm. Now is the time when you are happy to hear that your dog's normal temperature is a few degrees higher than yours, so snuggle up! Are you and your family all set for winter?

Dog Grooming- Hair Brushing

Dog grooming is one of your dog's basic needs and an important part of dog ownership. Just like people, dogs need physical maintenance to look and feel their best. Generally, a dog’s grooming needs depend on the breed and hair type. If your dog has a skin, ear or nail condition, follow your veterinarian’s instructions regarding grooming your dog. It is also important to use the appropriate grooming tools. Here are some dog grooming basics to remember.

A dog’s minimum brushing needs depend on hair type. Choose the right tools and follow these guidelines.

Long-haired dogs usually require daily brushing to prevent matting and tangling of hair.
Medium-haired dogs may be prone to matting and tangles and should be brushed at least weekly.
Short-haired dogs can typically go up to a month in-between brushing.
Regardless of hair type, you can brush your dog daily - especially if he enjoys it. More frequent brushing during shedding season can help prevent hair build-up and excess shedding.

Man jailed for attack on pet dog

The RSPCA is looking for a new home for Madison
A man has been jailed for three months for punching, kicking and stamping on his pet dog in a "shocking, wanton act of cruelty".

RSPCA officials said the injuries on the 18-month old Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog, Madison, were among the worst they had seen.

John Martell, 40, attacked the dog after it urinated in the lift near his home in Mulberry Court, Salford.

At Salford Magistrates Court Martell admitted causing unnecessary suffering.

The court heard Martell kicked Madison four times, punched him three times and stamped on his back five times.

The ordeal was witnessed by a security guard who recorded it on CCTV.

'Sustained attack'

The court was told Martell had been suffering from alcohol problems and had argued with his girlfriend moments before the attack in April.

Madison was treated for swollen, puffy eyes, and will need lifelong vet treatment.

Sentencing Martell to jail and banning him from keeping all animals for life, the chairman of the Bench John Connor said: "This was a deliberate and sustained attack against a defenceless animal."

RSPCA chief inspector Cathy Hyde said: "This was one of the worst attacks on an animal that I've ever seen.

"There's no excusing what this man did. It was a shocking, wanton act of cruelty carried out without provocation.

"The sentence reflects the callous and cruel nature of this case."

Hero dog risks life to save kittens from fire

A dog was hailed as a hero on Sunday after it risked its life to save a litter of newborn kittens from a house fire, rescuers said.

In a case which gives the lie to the saying about 'fighting like cats and dogs', the terrier cross named Leo had to be revived with oxygen and heart massage after his ordeal. Fire broke out overnight at the house in Australia's southern city of Melbourne, where he was guarding the kittens.

Fire fighters who revived Leo said he refused to leave the building and was found by them alongside the litter of kittens, despite thick smoke.

"Leo wouldn't leave the kittens and it nearly cost him his life," fire service Commander Ken Brown told reporters.

The four kittens also survived the fire and Sunday Leo,

Police Officers Kick Pet Dogs

Two police officers have been told they face possible jail sentences for causing suffering and "mental terror" to their two pet dogs.

Magistrates in Denbigh heard how Anja Mason, 29 and Craig Macleod, 34, who lived together in Prestatyn, now also face losing their jobs.

A neighbour filmed them hitting and kicking the pets and called the RSPCA.

Both admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a collie pup called Tess and Macleod to a rottweiler, Snoopy.

Both officers, who will be sentenced on 25 November, have been removed from frontline duties until the end of the case, said North Wales Police.

The court was told a neighbour had been concerned about the ill-treatment of dogs at the property and had called the RSPCA on several occasions.

There were several incidents of deliberate ill-treatment and frightening of the dogs

Wendy Gibbs, chair of magistrates

However, when an RSPCA inspector found no evidence of cruelty, the neighbour bought camera equipment and positioned it overlooking the couple's yard.

Prosecuting, Glenn Murphy said: "To her credit this lady purchased a camera and she took many hours of video footage."

A DVD, about 15-20 minutes in length, was played to the court.

In one scene Mason was filmed hitting the pup's head and kicking her.

Later the dog was seen pulling washing from a line before Macleod emerged from the house and chased it to a corner of the yard. Out of shot of the camera the dog could then be heard yelping.

'Intentionally caused pain'

In other scenes, Macleod sprayed the dogs with water and Mason is seen chasing the puppy with what appears to be a stick.

The rottweiler can also be heard yelping as it is apparently abused by Macleod off camera.

The court heard how Macleod had been concerned that the rottweiler was "over-zealous" with his eight-year-old daughter when she visited and he had been advised by a dog handler to spray water as a deterrent.

Magistrates chairwoman Wendy Gibbs told the defendants: "There were several incidents of deliberate ill-treatment and frightening of the dogs."

She said the magistrates had found no mitigating factors.

She added: "You intentionally caused pain and suffering to both dogs and mental terror to both dogs."

"You risked injury to both dogs by kicking them."

She said all sentencing options would remain open, including custody.

Magistrates found no mitigating factors for the actions of Macleod and Mason

Both defendants had faced six charges relating to alleged offences between March and April 2008.

However the majority of the charges were withdrawn when no evidence was offered against them.

The court heard the DVD had been viewed by a vet who concluded "the actions were not those of a reasonably competent and humane carer".

Joanne Stephens, defending, said neither Mason nor Macleod had intended to cause the animals pain.

The court heard both dogs were signed over to the RSPCA by their owners and are now doing well.

Miss Stephens said: "The defendants stand to lose their jobs as a result of having a criminal conviction which would affect their livelihoods."

Speaking after the case, RSPCA spokesman Gethin Russell-Jones said it was one of the most unusual cases he had been involved in because it hinged on the DVD evidence.

"There was no other evidence, and this neighbour had constructed this camera and concealed it and over the course of about a month...had captured these scenes," he said.

"Yes, that was crucial, and I'm sure as far as the court was concerned it was fairly striking evidence."

Asked about the fact the defendants are police officers, he said: "We prosecute without discrimination, and always fairly, so their occupation is irrelevant as far as we're concerned.

"If we find that animals have been treated unfairly, cruelly, or there's been unnecessary suffering, then the whole weight of the law comes down on them. The magistrate did say that, and it was a very harsh summing up."

A North Wales Police spokeswoman said: "Following today's appearance, both officers have been removed from front line duties and placed in non-operational roles pending the result of the case.

"As matters have not yet been finalised in court, it would be wholly inappropriate to make further comment at present." Source: Dog News

Welcome to the age of Cloned Pets

Bernann McKinney's late pit bull has been reborn as five cloned puppies -- the first successful commercial canine cloning, and no doubt the dawn of a new age.

The joyous American pet owner held the clones of her beloved terrier, Booger, at a press conference Tuesday in South Korea. She's the inaugural customer of RNL Bio, a company that teamed up with Seoul National University, which gave us the world's first cloned dog emerged in 2005.

"It's a miracle," McKinney told reporters. But might a world filled with duplicate dogs and copycats be more rightfully called a Sci-Fi nightmare?

For those of you who favor traditional parenthood (and animal husbandry), please note that the pups were nursed by two surrogate bitches, both mixed breed dogs.

Woman face jail for stealing ex's dog

A Polish woman who couldn't bear being separated from her ex's dog could face up to five years behind bars for trying to steal the animal.

Beata Wolotka, 36, of Olsztyn, had begged her former partner to let her take the golden retriever for walks every now and again when they decided to split up.

He agreed. But when she failed to bring the dog back after taking him out for a stroll, the owner reported her to the police.

A police spokesman said: "The lady told us that she had grown extremely fond of the dog during her relationship with her ex and was very happy when he agreed to let her walk it.

"But she said she could no longer bear to be apart from it. She is distraught when she is not with it.

"It is hard to tell whether in her previous relationship she was more fond of the dog or her male partner."Dog News on the web

Animals have Personalities also

We know our siblings and in-laws have personalities — sometimes to a fault. But science recently has revealed that such individual differences are widespread in the animal kingdom, even reaching to spiders, birds, mice, squid, rats and pigs.

Now a new mathematical model helps to explain how and why such animal temperaments develop over time.

The model explains a central question of both animal and human personality — why certain individuals are more rigid or flexible than others, and why some change their behavior in response to changes in their environment while others do not.

The field of animal-personality study is starting to gain some substance and credibility, said University of Texas psychologist Sam Gosling, who does research in this field.

"When I started doing this, like 10 years ago, things were really different. I remember people thought it was anthropomorphic [to use the term animal personality]," said Gosling, who was not involved in the recent study.

Prestigious scientific journals are publishing research articles explicitly on the topic of animal personality, he said.

"I think it does reflect a new sense of respect in the field and I think it's opening up all kinds of important opportunities and allowing us to test questions we simply couldn't test without animal studies," Gosling said.

Individuals coexist
The researchers also found animal personalities tend to persist. That's because, as the adage goes, practice makes perfect. Individuals who are responsive gain experience, so it behooves them to continue such behavior in the future.

"Individuals that have been responsive before have a slight advantage in collecting or interpreting environmental cues," Weissing told LiveScience. "This is a plausible assumption, since the performance of individuals generally improves with the experience they have."
Similar personality types also exist in humans. "Some humans behave rather routine, in a rigid way. And others behave in a rather flexible way," Weissing said. "The first type is rather traditional, conservative, always following the trodden path of the past, whereas the other type is more interested in change, interested in the environment, always sampling the environment."

While the model simulations didn't directly analyze human behavior, Weissing said there is a crossover between non-human animals and the rest of the animal kingdom.

Police dog ends home gas threat

Police dog ends home gas threat
A police dog carrying a camera helped officers save a man who filled his home with gas and threatened to blow it up.

Gloucestershire Police sent Jedi, the German shepherd, into the property in Edway Parade, Gloucester, on Wednesday.

The man had told police that if they tried to get into the house he would ignite the gas.

Instead Jedi was sent in to find out where the man was and video footage collected allowed officers to swoop and arrest the 36-year-old.

He was arrested on suspicion of making threats to commit criminal damage with the intent to endanger life.

Gas supply

The man was taken to Gloucester's Royal Hospital for treatment for minor cuts.

On arrival at the house, police discovered the gas supply inside had been left on for some time.

Neighbours were evacuated and the gas supply to the house was cut off.

The video footage collected by the camera strapped to Jedi's back allowed officers to swoop and arrest the man at about 0330 BST.

Five years for 'armed' dog walker

The court heard how Farrell was stopped by armed officers
A man who was caught with a pistol, silencer and a live bullet while walking his dog in Glasgow has been jailed for five years.

Paul Farrell, 30, from the Maryhill area, admitted to having the items in his possession in November last year.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that he was asked to leave a flat in Killearn Street after producing the gun.

The police were called and Farrell was arrested after being stopped by armed officers in Saracen Street.

Jailing him, temporary judge Mark Stewart QC said: "The weapon you were in possession of is a dangerous one.

"You carried a loaded weapon in a public street when you were in the words of your defence counsel someone who did not know how to use it." Source: Dog News

Calif. lapdogs can stay just that in moving cars

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Hollywood celebrities can continue to drive with animals nestled in their laps.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is vetoing a bill to fine motorists $35 for sharing the driver's seat with lapdogs or other animals.
Republican Assemblyman Bill Maze says the practice is distracting. He introduced the bill after seeing a woman driving with three dogs on her lap.
Schwarzenegger says he's signing only bills that are "the highest priority for California." And a lapdog ban isn't one of them.

Attention: Im back--Hurricane hit Houston Hard

Happy to say Im back online after close to three weeks without no lights or water its been hell. The Hurricane hit us here in Houston very hard, trees were down all over the place. On streets on the roofs of houses on the telephone poles and the streets well you could not get through some of them for all the trees on the roads and some of the streets near the freeways looked like lakes thats how bad they were flooded. I had not seen such a Hurricane like this in years and hope never to see one again. I was miserable without any light, all we had were candles or flashlights or lanterns and did I ever miss my computer and t.v. We all had to get water from places that were donating soldiers rations and bottled water and ice and you were lucky if you could get some ice. I used a small ice chest and kept a few sodas and lunch meat in the chest and luckkkkkkky I was able to find some bread before it was all sold out, also got a few bags of dog food.. If you wanted a Hot cup of coffee youd better have a barbeque grill or propane stove or some kind of bur
