Valbonne IV

Ok, and then sometimes the Marina Artists team paints beautiful houses for friends and acquaintances... we had so much fun painting the two pools... Hard work, sipping your drinks in the sun whilst moving your brushes... The house is a very good example of the ideal home in the South of France! The kind of villa that our clients would love to have - lots of room, facing South, great covered terraces, a pool... OK, and one more pool (for the kids). And then the location, close enough to Valbonne and at the same time peaceful and quiet. OK, so this one is not for sale - but if you are interested, we have a couple of other true finds in that area-just have a look on our website!

Vence - NL vertaling

English translation below...

Vence II

The Marina Artists team has been working hard lately - those Riviera Home Finders agents are selling as if there is no credit crunch (Crisis? what crisis...)!! My colleague David Prince just sold this great villa, with stunning views, just outside the great village of Vence... Apart from sunny views and a lovely authentic old centre, Vence is a very cultural place: it has 22 Ateliers (you can visit them and see the artists at work) and 12 Galleries (maybe even more- but 12 I know for sure). One of them is galerie Chave, the oldest gallery in Vence. It was founded by Alphonse Chave in 1947 and it has work of impressive guys like Marx Ernst, Man Ray, Fred Deux and Slavko Kopac. It is a symbol for “Art Brut”... Then Vence has a museum, in the Rue Grande, and, last but not least, the splendid Fondation Maeght: a private museum that has a stunning permanent collection of modern and contemporary art. There is a Giacometti courtyard, a Miró labyrinth and ceramics and mural mosaics by Chagall. The pool and a stained glass window are made by Braque and there is so much more.. of course they also have temporary exhibitions. In short - a good place for the body as well as the mind... If you want to be close to the arts - choose to live in Vence. And if you are seriously interested in a house like the above, you can contact us! At RHF we'll take care of everything you need where properties are concerned...

Beaumes de Venise

My RHF colleague Elayne Murphy sold another great villa, surrounded by beautiful, now red, vineyards. Her area is the Luberon - Vaucluse and Bouche du Rhône, and this fabulous villa is located in Beaumes de Venise. The new owners, a lovely young English couple, have a lot of goodies waiting for them in their new place...

Beaumes-de-Venise is built against a line of cliffs along the southwestern edge of the Ventoux mountains. The streets of the medieval village rise up to those sandstone cliffs - with many prehistoric caves, that can be visited. ("Beaume" is french for cave, hence the name... )In the village itself there are beautiful old buildings, churches and fountains as well as the ruins of a 12th century château - at the highest point in the village. Apart from its interesting caves and old hardstone romantic architecture in the center, the village is also wellknown for its wine, the Beaumes de Venise Muscat wine is very distinguished and a perfect combination with for instance fried foie gras. And Beaumes has another excellent wine: the red Côte du Rhône Villages... Like many other South French villages, Beaumes also boasts an excellent high quality olive oil - that you can purchase, together with a whole range of local products in the shop of the oil mill. In short, people who live in that lovely, authentic, sunny South French village, have interesting sites to visit and great wines to drink - it is indeed a dream come true...

Mougins

Another fine large-sized aquarelle from the hands of the Marina Artists Team! It is a fabulous villa in Mougins, you see part of it on the painting but there is much more where that came from, for example an Indonesian style garden, with a jacuzzi on high poles, guest house with its own pool - and then the location! The new owners haven't chosen Mougins for nothing - it is such a sought-after village: over 13.000 inhabitants, many of them non-french. Pablo Picasso was one of them. He lived since 1961 in the Mas on the top of the hill at Notre-Dame-de-Vie (close to the house in the picture we painted) until he died there in 1973.

Around the corner of "our" villa is the property of Pablo's daughter Paloma. And what's more, the villa lies at l'Etang de Fontmerle, a large open area that is very very popular for strolling, kite-flying, playing with the kids and having picnics. The Etang de Fontmerle is a lake, covered with lotus flowers, the largest collection of them in France. Another great thing about Mougins: wining and dining! Mougins is filled with restaurants. There are around 50 restaurants there, most of them (I have tried a lot) very good, with star-quality food and great, friendly service. Great place to be, great place to live... If you are interested to join us, for more sunshine, better food and the good lifestyle in general, you could look for a place to live in or around Mougins (or elsewhere on the Riviera) on the Riviera Home Finders website! We'll be happy to help you!

Sainte Maxime III: Babar the elephant

Two posts ago I wrote about the beautiful village Sainte Maxime, where Jean de Brunhoff lived, the creator of "Babar the Elephant".
The next day I passed a bookshop in my beloved village Valbonne and the first thing I saw in the window was a Babar book! Turns out it still is a very popular French children's character now, in 2008, though the first Histoire de Babar appeared in 1931! The first English language version (The Story of Babar) saw the light in 1933 -in Britain and the United States. The story is based on the bedtime stories that Cecile Brunhoff (his wife) made up for their kids. They are about a young elephant thatleaves the jungle to the big city, and comes back with the knowledge and benefits of civilization for his fellow elephants.
Jean de Brunhoff only wrote 6 stories - he died in 1937 - only 37 years old. His son Laurent carried on with the series. In 1989, Babar hit the television screens as a cartoon, with 78 episodes. They were broadcast in 30 languages, in over 150 countries. The Babar brand worked: there are 12 dedicated Babar stores in Japan, and over 30,000 Babar publications, in 17 languages worldwide, and over 8 million books have been sold. Not a bad way to go for a bedtime story that started 80 years ago...!Next posts will be about the paintings of the Marina Artists' team again - they are ready for handing out by the RHF-agents at their respective signatures he coming weeks but we don't want to spoil the surprise for their future owners!

Vence

Our RHF colleague David Prince just sold this stunning property to a lovely English couple with two kids. It is located south of the beautiful village of Vence, close to the international school and it overlooks the Cagne valley to the sea over Cagnes-sur-Mer.
To be close to Vence is wonderful - it is a town that has something new to offer everytime you go there (even if it is every day!), be it cultural, monumental or "just" the friendly athmosphere! Vence itself is medieval, the town exists since the 12th century. It combines the grandeur of a historical town with the lively charm of a popular place in the south of France: terrific shops, mediterranean colours and smells, terraces, plane trees and many galeries with fabulous art and a great court for our local sport - pétanque!

Sainte Maxime II

The Marina Artists team did two paintings of this gorgeous property, that lies on walking distance of the centre of the lovely village Sainte Maxime! Sainte Maxime is situated in the Gulf of Saint Tropez and faces straight south. It has the great advantage that it is sheltered from the Mistral by the surrounding mountains. A visit to the beautiful beaches (directly in the centre and thus walking distance from this villa) and the Azure blue sea is always worthwhile! One of the beaches is called "elephant beach" because it plays a role in "the voyage of Babar the Elephant". That famous children's book was actually written in Sainte Maxime...

The first time the name popped up - as Sancta Maxima- was in the 11th century - but there are signs of habitation in the prehistoric times and the Romans have been there for a long time.

In 1000, the Lerins Islands monks - who have been everywhere and very active in the Riviera area!- built a monastery and evangelized the locals. They built the Tour Carrée which, along with the Tour du Portalet of Saint Tropez, protected the Gulf from invaders. Later they added a battery of cannons.
Some of these medieval aspects, like the cannons, 15th century town hall and the Tour Carré, have survived the times and can be admired today. The centre is pedestrian area and looks lovely, in a way you 'd expect from a village in the South of France! "Sitting in front of the bakery with a warm croissant, strong coffee on a sunny morning" gives you a feel for what it's like...

Argeles

RHF International's James Edgecombe from the Pyrénées Orientales has done another great deal - in fact he sold his second beach house in Argeles! On the painting from the Marina Artists' team that he gave away to the new owners you can clearly see that this is a true beach house with a splendid view on the beach! I am told that there are numerous little rocky creeks for scuba diving and that in Argeles windsurfing and surfing are better than anywhere else : the wind - the Tramontane - makes it really challenging! And if you're not into water sports - a brisk walk along the wide sandy beach is another possibility: there's 7 kilometres of it! For those of you who are not into any sports, you'll have to make do with sitting in the sun on one of the many terraces, sipping a nice strong espresso or a rosé - or another drink. Interested in the area? Contact James, through the RHF site

Cap d'Antibes II

Over 2000 years ago the the site of Antibes was called "the jewel of the Côte d'Azur". And still Antibes and Cap d'Antibes are magical places to walk, shop, sunbathe, eat and drink - and that could be great for a holiday, but imagine that you actually lived there and had all that every day of the year... Well, you can! Riviera Home Finder's Chris Davenport just sold another house with a view in Cap d'Antibes - of which the Marina artist's team made a picture - and he has many more in stock! Just go to our website and have a look at the fabulous properties we have for sale...

Sault

Our dear colleague Philippe just sold his first property, a lovely house in the village of Sault.

The watercolour painting that he gave away at the notary's office, as RHF agents always do, was also a first, for a new painter in the Marina's Artist's team: Cathie. As you can see she's very talented and I'm sure the new owners as well as the former owners will be delighted!Sault is a small village in the Vaucluse (Provence) with a population of just over a thousand people... It is one of the major stages of the "Road of the Lavender" (a discovery track organized around distilleries, fields of lavender and activities related to lavender).

Callian

Callian is a lovely medieval hill-top village in the Var. Callian is older than medieval: it is first mentioned in the 1st century, as part of the logistic base of Caesar's legions. Apparently it was a rather important rural group settlement, around a sanctuary of "our Lady of Rose" (the chapel is the most ancient building of the village and can be visited). In 1249, Callian appears as "castrum" in the documents, but after the big plague of 1348, followed by the famine of 1364, it was completely deserted by its inhabitants. In the 15th century it emerged again and has florished since then.
Callian has a very Provençal and authentic atmosphere, exactly what you expect from such a lovely, old, historic place, but it also lies close to the beautiful lake of Saint Cassien, and therefore offers the possibility to sail, fish and swim.

In the nicest residential area of Callian, my RHF colleague and friend Karin has a beautiful newly built villa for sale that has everything you can wish for. Apart from the great location, it has the combination of the quiet Provençal area with all possibilities to go out for sports, shopping, great food and culture. And it is roomy - 260m², built with the best quality fittings and a landscaped garden of 5065m² with a terrific pool, but also a romantic, old stone country shed on it. The villa is south facing (towards the famous 5 star golf resort Terre Blanche) and has a fully equipped Siemens kitchen and a large living room with Boley fireplace. It has 4 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. It doesn't need work, you can start enjoying the good life as soon as you enter the door... And all that for € 1,250,000... Pyrénées Orientales: Les Aspres

This beautiful creation of the Marina's artists team is made after an old stone Mas in les Asprès on 1 hectare of land, that was sold by my colleague James (who happens to be on a roll - or selling like crazy if you like- you will see many more paintings of houses from his area "the 66" in September).
Les Asprès is 30 minutes from Céret and an hour from Perpignan and this stone farmhouse has amazing views across the mountains beyond Fort Belle Guarde at Perthus on the Spanish border. The house uses water from it's own spring and the former owners have been almost self sufficient with vegetables from their garden.
Apart from the lovely mas itself, there is a lovely summer house under a weeping willow in the garden, a great spot to enjoy BBQs with seating around an old millstone table. There is also an old agricultural building, large enough to make into a gite, or which could be rebuilt as a house.
The countryside abounds with natural produce - herbs, fruit and mushrooms. An excellent home with much development potential, located in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. We wish the new owners all the happiness in the world with their beautiful new property!

Valbonne - Nightlife

Last week I promised to write a bit about the nightlife of Valbonne. I thought I would be out there the next night, but I have been so busy (painting) that the first occasion was yesterday!

Luckily, in Valbonne, it is always lively, autumn, winter, spring and summer!
The whole village is alive, right now in high season, all a bit extra, with music, clowns, mime players, fire eaters and the "light man" as we call him. Balloons for the children and much more...

Of course the best place to be is the "place des Arcades" with the great terraces, "Les Arcades", "Terra Rossa", "JDeed" and "l'Auberge"
The other restaurants have their tables outside in the streets. Everybody at the long tables, is eating, drinking, talking to each other (hilarious as this is in many many different languages) and having a good time. Also in Valbonne: the Riviera Home Finders office... but we're closed most nights! Too busy having fun with our clients, showing them the South-French way of life...
