Cola, aka soda, aka pop, is an under appreciated candy variety here in the States, although I don’t know why. Cola is a fun, sparkling flavor with a refreshing zing. For whatever reason, American candy manufacturers have largely ignored cola flavor in their candies, much to my dismay. The only cola candy readily available (read as, at Walgreens and European markets) is Haribo cola gummies, and those aren’t even American, but German.

In Japan, gohan, rice, is synonymous with meal. It’s a cinch to toss a few seasonal ingredients into a pot of cooking rice to make an instant meal that utilizes all the season has to offer. Takashi Okazaki’s creation, Afro Samurai, struck it big when it made the leap from small time doujinshi to full blown anime in 2007. GONZO headed the animation and created a beautiful five episode series rife with butt-whooping and blood-letting. It aired on Spike TV to rave reviews and had such big names as Samuel Jackson and Ron Perlman as members of the voice cast.
Now, the manga-ka is back, and he’s writing and drawing the latest installment in the growing Afro Samurai franchise.
