What Happens In Vegas

Cameron Diaz is a jilted Wall Streeter, Ashton Kutcher’s an out-of-work carpenter, the two getting hitched on a drunken whim in Las Vegas then going to extremes to scheme each other out of the $3-million jackpot they won. The movie comes in a single-disc DVD with the theatrical version or a two-disc DVD and Blu-ray high-definition sets with an extended cut. The two-disc DVD and Blu-ray releases also pack a chat with Diaz and Kutcher, behind-the-scenes segments, commentary with director Tom Vaughan and a digital copy of the movie for portable video players. The Blu-ray set includes deleted and extended scenes, as well. (20th Century Fox)

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas

Returning to DVD and making its Blu-ray debut is the filmmaker’s first stop-motion animated feature, starring anti-hero, Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween who decides to expand his empire and take over Christmas. Highlighting the extras is Burton’s early short film, the horror comedy Frankenweenie, about a pet dog killed by a car and brought back to life Frankenstein-style by his mourning owner. Also included is commentary with producer Burton, director Henry Selick and musical collaborator Danny Elfman, deleted scenes, a digital copy of the movie and a Burton poem read by Christopher Lee. The Blu-ray release also features an introduction from Burton. (Disney)

The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning

One of Disney’s biggest animated hits gets a straight-to-DVD prequel that floats an adventure in the early days of the underwater heroine. Jodi Benson reprises her big-screen role as the voice of mermaid Ariel and Samuel E. Wright returns as mouthpiece for her best buddy, Sebastian the crab. The new flick casts them into an adventure to restore song and dance to her sea kingdom, where music has been banned. The DVD features deleted scenes, a segment on “mermaid choreography” and a backstage look at the Broadway musical version of The Little Mermaid. (Disney)

Las Vegas - Guess Who’s Coming to Breakfast

The big news of the night is that Mike and Piper get married. Say what?! Yes, married. It happens when they go to steal a hot bartender from another nightclub. I mean, this guy is totally worth it, because he puts Tom Cruise’s Cocktail to shame with his fun bar stunts. In the process, though, Mike and Piper end up getting smashed and…yikes…waking up in bed together the next morning with wedding rings and the whole bit. “Let’s just keep this between us until we can make it go away,” says Mike.

But that doesn’t exactly work when Danny and Delinda figure it out, and Cooper overhears them talking about it. And then…Mike and Piper sort of get into being married. Not the sex part, but the part where they banter and eat food off each others’ plates and talk on the phone at night. And Delinda thinks they should reconsider an annulment, as well. They do go through with the annulment, but judging by next week’s previews, they’re still into each other.

Meanwhile, in a totally stupid storyline, Sam retrieves a couple of her whales from a strip joint called Skin City. She has this guy called The Cleaner whose job it is to erase any aromas of the strip club on their clothes. He’s like the guy with “the kit” on 24, only this guy’s kit consists of cleaning products – so, you know, the wives can’t tell where the guys have been.

The only problem is the guy wants to retire, so Sam appeals to his grandson to take over the business. He’s working for a nonprofit to pay for the sins of his family over three generations, but finally acquiesces and comes over to the dark side to clean the sins off of people. Whatever.

And in another kind of dumb storyline, Cooper really wants to install an ice bar at the Montecito, but Danny doesn’t because they’d just be stealing the idea from Mandalay Bay. So Cooper makes Danny come up with another plan, which he presents to the staff who then votes to…install the ice bar. But then Cooper says he likes Danny’s idea to expand Opus onto the top floor for a city-wide view. So another whatever.

Not one of the better episodes, although I did like the Mike/Piper twist.

Swizzle shtick

We zoom down the Strip during the day, because if we saw all the neon, that might raise the question, “Why are we spending all this time inside a hotel when we could be outside checking out the fake New York skyline, or the fake Parisian cafés, or anything else at all?” Because this show is like a casino, that’s why: planned to make you wander around in an achronous daze, bereft of any orienting landmarks that might actually tell you where you are or how you got there, until you forget about actually leaving. Or, in this case, changing the channel.

Anyway, the computer-generated sign for the Montecito comes up, and we see that the casino is hosting an eponymous world-poker championship and featuring the magic of Vanko and Vera. The entertainment cup has runneth over, huh? But boy, does Dreamworks need to shift some money from the show’s zippy-camera department to the Photoshop monkeys: that sign looks like something I’d get forwarded in an email message along with pictures of kittens held at gunpoint.

Then, just in case you didn’t get to read the sign, we zoom inside the Montecito so we can see some security guard standing next to another sign announcing the poker tournament. Well, give these clowns’ general incompetence when it comes to keeping an eye out on live humans, I guess it’s best to let them practice on inanimate objects.

And on with the poker. Two announcers VO that this is one of the biggest poker events of the year, the stakes are high, the players are skilled, blah blee blah. We see a bunch of people the forum folks say are actual professional poker players, and then we see someone with the kind of poreless skin and symmetrical cheekbones that scream, “ACTOR!” The actor is acting all nervous, and we see a little bead of sweat run off his sideburn, drop, and turn into a prism reflecting the rest of the casino. And this is where someone needs to sit down the special effects department and tell them, “Just because you can do the transition doesn’t mean you should do the transition.” Also: it seems like copious flop sweat would be one of those tells that poker players would try to avoid. Deranged Hollywood types and socialites already Botox their armpits and feet so they don’t sweat all over their fancy-schmancy dresses and shoes; why wouldn’t poker players try to Botox their troublesome tell sites?

Vanessa Marcil

A mix of Mexican, French, Italian, and Portuguese roots, Vanessa Marcil was born Vanessa Ortiz on October 15, 1969, in Indio, California. She started acting when she was just 8 years old but decided to study law after graduating from high school. However, the acting bug persisted and Marcil turned to theater, acting in several Neil Simon productions. In 1992, the actress joined the cast of General Hospital and stayed for six years (she returned to guest star in 2000, 2002, and 2003).

While working on General Hospital, Marcil appeared in the film The Rock and the made-for-television movie To Love, Honor, and Deceive. In 1997 she had a recurring guest role on the TV series High Incident. After leaving the soap opera, she joined the cast of Beverly Hills 90210 in 1998 but left two years later to pursue other projects such as the forgettable movies Nice Guys Sleep Alone, This Space Between Us, and Storm Watch. In 2003, Marcil landed a role on Las Vegas starring James Caan.

The actress married actor Corey Feldman in 1989 but divorced him two years later. She has a son with Beverly Hills 90210 costar Brian Austin Green.
Smolderingly beautiful actress Vanessa Marcil had a talent for performing from the time she was a little girl. She started out by acting in school plays and in talent shows, eventually winning the role of Brenda Barrett on the daytime soap General Hospital in 1996. Later that same year, she caught the attention of a much wider audience when she was cast opposite Nicolas Cage in the high-octane action thriller The Rock. A few years later, she joined the cast of the tawdry night-time soap Beverly Hills 90210, which she stayed with for two seasons. In 2003, she was cast in the series Las Vegas, a one-hour dramedy about the ins and outs of a high-roller casino. Audiences loved the show and they loved Marcil just as much — she stayed with the series for multiple seasons.
