Ram: To Big for Driving Comfort

The Ram is a full-size pickup truck from Chrysler LLC's Dodge brand. The ram is known for having a bold style, great power and excellent interior comfort, making it ideal for work and play.
For the year 2008, Dodge unveiled the 2008 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs at the Chicago Auto Show on Wednesday, Feb. 7. The 2008 Ram 1500 Mega Cab 4X2 is a 4-door, up to 6-passenger full size pickup, available in 3 trims, ranging from the SXT SWB to the LARAMIE SWB.
"Both trims are equipped with a standard 5.7 liter, V8, 345 horsepower engine. A 5 speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. This V8 makes an impressive 345 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque." This car earns an acceptable score from reviewers for its performance. The Ram's new fuel-saving technology is impressive. The Hemi V8 features the first-ever fully-functioning cylinder deactivation system on a pickup truck.
The macho and bold exterior is the best of its class. Its looks are its strongest selling point. A new six-sided chrome grille and large, angular headlights were added. Mostly, the Dodge Ram appearance is known for its gigantic feature.
Another quality that impresses the reviewers is the quality of the interior. This is largest and longest cab in its class and can fit in six persons comfortably.
The massive appearance may be pleasing to some, but on the other hand, some reviewers found out that its size makes it difficult to be parked or maneuvered.
As from reviewers findings, it is concluded that dodge ram is a powerful off-road vehicle that provides a comfortable everyday ride but with plenty of big-truck disadvantage.
Infiniti Introduce 2008 G37

The 2008 G37 Coupe is a 2-door, 4-passenger luxury sports coupe, available in 3 trims, ranging from the Base to the Sport 6MT. It was first featured at the New York Auto Show in April. It is said to be the successor to the popular G35 Coupe.
"Upon introduction, the Base is equipped with a standard 3.7-liter, V6, 330-horsepower engine that achieves 18-mpg in the city and 24-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The Sport 6MT is equipped with a standard 3.7-liter, V6, 330-horsepower engine that achieves 17-mpg in the city and 26-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard."
The stylists made several small changes that made the car even more attractive from all angles. At the front, the Sport model fascia has separate brake duct openings which provide a more aggressive look. It also has a chrome surface of the integral rear spoiler on the edge of the deck lid. The car is mounted on a 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels that are part of the Sport package.
Much of the interior appears to be closely similar to the 2007 G35 sedan. It features a charcoal and gray colored interior that well pleases the eye. It also has an LCD screen, clear enough to be visible even in bright daylight. The perfectly made cushioning and bolster made it more comfortable compared to any other coupes.
The Powerful Artega GT

The Artega GT was debuted early this year at the Geneva Auto Show. It was the star of the said auto show last March. Some German magazine reports that sales of the Artega GT, by Paragon (supplier of Artega GT), will commence in summer of 2008.
The car is designed by Henrik Fisker, a former Aston Martin designer whilst engineering development has been assisted by former Porsche technical designer Hardy Essig. Artega GT represents a new beginning, with no purpose to bring a historical brand back to life. It looks like a lost cousin of the Porsche Cayman, but it wasn't design after that model.
Its combination of speed, efficiency and low-weight ensures spirited driving, while its premium and relatively spacious interior will make you want to stay behind the wheel. It weighs in at 1100kg, thanks to its aluminum space frame and carbon composite body shell.
The Artega GT is powered by a VW-sourced 3.6L V6. The automaker claims that the car can accelerate from 0-60 in under five seconds on its way to a top speed of 155 mph. Some of the car's technical specifications include an aluminum space frame, and a carbon-fiber reinforced body. Also, automakers say that the Artega GT comes in with the rumored 300 horsepower and a top speed in excess of 160 mph.
Gas Price Down, But Not Enough

The price of fuel has become a huge problem for many of us. It always seems to go up that it is more convenient for some people to just commute to work or wherever they are going instead of gassing up their car.
In Chicago, there's a bit of good news as the price of fuel has gone down. But it is not really very good news as it is still higher than last year's level. The Auto Channel reported that fuel prices in Chicago have gone down by 16 cents per gallon.
AAA Chicago's spokesperson Nicole Niemi, pointed out the reason for this changes in the price of fuel saying: "Fuel prices continue to fluctuate month-to-month largely due to crude oil prices and consumption rates. Additionally, some refineries are not operating at full capacity, which could further cause prices at the pump to fluctuate."
No matter what car you drive, even if it is equipped with an Acura cabin filter, you are still affected by the increasing price of fuel. And if you are from Illinois, you might want to take note of this information from select locations according to The Auto Channel.
- In Cook County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.15, which is down 12 cents compared to last month and 79 cents higher than last year's price-per-gallon.
- In DuPage County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.04 per gallon, which is a 16-cent decrease from January and 78 cents higher than last year.
- In Kane County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.03 per gallon, which is 15 cents lower compared to last month and 77 cents higher than February 2007's price.
- In Lake County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $2.99 per gallon, which is 18 cents lower than last month and up by 74 cents compared to this time last year.
- In McHenry County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $2.98 per gallon, which is 19 cents lower than January's average and 71 cents higher than February 2007's price.
- In Will County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.03 per gallon, which is 18 cents lower compared to last month and 74 cents higher compared to last year.
- In Champaign County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $2.87 per gallon, a decrease of 21 cents from January and an increase of 63 cents from last year.
- In McLean County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $2.98 per gallon, which is 15 cents lower than last month and 79 cents lower than last year.
- In Peoria County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $2.95 per gallon, which is a 19-cent decrease compared to last month and a 70-cent increase from February 2007.
- In Sangamon County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $2.93 per gallon, which is 20 cents lower than last month and 70 cents higher than last year.
- In Winnebago County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.04 per gallon, a decrease of 22 cents from January and an increase of 79 cents from February 2007
General Motors & Toyota Tops Vincentric's
The 2008 Vincentric's Best Value in America Awards was dominated by two of the most outstanding auto manufacturers in the planet. GM and Toyota led the pack of worldwide nameplates for this year's awards. According to the Auto Channel, GM carried the force of its full-size pickups to notch 10 awards. On the other hand, Toyota brands also made a great impression with 8 captivating vehicles which includes the Scion xB.
President of Vincentric, David Wurster, said that they saw a large number of different makes winning Vincentric's Best Value in America award. "This shows the incredibly strong competition in today's market. The strong results from newly released vehicles make it clear that a focus on newly designed vehicles will be a requirement for manufacturers to provide a strong value proposition to consumers," he added.

GM's Chevy Volt Set For Mass-Production By 2010
Automakers are now in a hype to cut fuel costs.
General Motors, the world's number one automaker is planning to strengthen the production of its plug-in Chevrolet Volt, the first vehicle application of GM's new E-Flex platform. E-Flex is a platform for electrically-driven vehicles.
In Reuters, GM Vice President for Global Program Management Jon Lauckner said that the company is optimistic that per vehicle, price will drop despite high costs of battery development.
"As volume scales up, you will move down this curve to see better economics going forward. You can't get hung up on the economics of the first unit or the tenth unit," Lauckner said.
GM envisions itself being the first automaker to mass-produce and grab the lead on all-electric fuel-saving technology from rival Toyota Motor Corp.
GM's Chevy Volt is a C-Class sized four door sedan. It has a turbocharged, 1.0-liter three cylinder engine that twists out at 71 horsepower. It is powered by a battery pack much like an Acura Legend clutch kit, connected to the front of its wheels that provides at least 161 horsepower (120kW). It is also known as plug-in car maybe because it can be fully charged in about six and a half hours by plugging it in to any typical 110 V outlet. On each side of the car are two plugs to allow home charging. It is estimated that for every 10 miles of electric power, about $1,500 worth of cost is added to your fuel bill.
"Many, if not most, consumers in the United States would never need to buy gasoline, or buy gasoline very rarely," said Lauckner.
Using the battery, the Volt has a range of approximately 40 miles. Therefore, your Volt can have a range of 640 miles if you fill your fuel tank with 12 US gallons of gas.
Meanwhile, GM plans to start its Chevy Volt production by the end of 2010.
Theissen Still Confident Of BMW's Chances

Mario Theissen, BMW Sauber boss, remains confident the German squad will compete closely with Ferrari and McLaren this season, notwithstanding a somewhat faltering start for its new car in early testing.
Last season, the team was the third strongest. But with the disqualification of the Woking team form the constructors' championship, BMW was pushed one place higher.
During the launch of the new F1.08 last month, Theissen said that he expected the new car to be a "big step forward." But the F1.08 has not yet made much of an impact on the testing timesheets and Nick Heidfeld has admitted it feels less well-balanced than its predecessor did at the same stage in 2007.
Nonetheless, BMW is positive about the new car's reliability. BMW technical director Willy Rampf said that there was no cause for concern on performance grounds as the team has not yet unlocked the F1.08's true potential.
While Theissen has admitted that it would be unrealistic to expect the team to mount a season-long title challenge, he remains hopeful that the team can score its first GP victory this year.
"We are very confident that we have got what it takes to turn the duel involving the two teams ahead of us into a three-way battle. We are aware that realizing this goal will be anything but easy," he said in an interview. "After all, the two teams ahead of us are not only the most competitive on the grid but also more experienced than anybody else. Consequently, we have to expect that they also have made progress with their new cars."
BMW will introduce modifications to the new car for the test at Barcelona which starts today. If you want to see upgrades on the BMW wheels or other racing parts, this could be it.
Kia Extends Sponsorship
Korean automaker Kia recently is slowly making its presence felt all over the world. Earlier this year, the Kia cee'd has been declared as the most decorated Korean vehicle in Europe after it received awards after awards from different countries in Europe.
The automaker is not only focusing on the auto market but also in sports - tennis to be exact. The Auto Channel recently reported that the Korean automaker has extended its sponsorship of the Australian Open. The report stated that Kia has extended their sponsorship of the sporting event until the year 2013.
Kia Motors' President and Chief Executive Officer Euisun Chung had this to say: "The excitement and passion we have once again seen on and off the court, as well as behind the scenes, is the very reason why Kia Motors identifies with the tournament and wants to renew its commitment until 2013. The Australian Open is a great global entertainment event and has huge potential to grow. Kia wants to help sustain and develop this same passion and excitement for the wonderful world of tennis amongst new and existing fans and players throughout the world."
The automaker though will not be moving its focus away from developing auto parts such as the axle assembly. The Korean automaker is very much expected to continue its rise among the ranks of automakers.
Steve Wood, Tennis Australia CEO, meanwhile had this to say: "Since Kia first sponsored the Australian Open in 2002, it has worked hard to engrain itself further into the sport and build a sustainable partnership not just with this tournament but the game of tennis as a whole. The continuity of our relationship is our strength and we look forward to building on our successes and continue to grow the Australian Open global brand."

The latest results of the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Manufacturer Web Site Evaluation Study(SM) (MWES)-Wave 1 is already out! This year's top ranked manufacturer web site is actually last year's most admired site. The top honor goes to HUMMER.com. If you have your free time, try to visit HUMMER's homepage, and you'd surely say that it its absolutely number one. It's as cool as your PCV valve.
According to the Auto Channel, the evaluation of each manufacturer's web site determines the convenience and usefulness during the process of new-vehicle shopping. There are four areas that are being assessed by the new car shoppers, and these are appearance, speed, navigation, and information/content. On the latest study, it revealed that the HUMMER's web site dominates the competition. HUMMER achieved a total index score of 867 on a 1,000-point scale.
"HUMMER continues to set the standard with a Web site that satisfies shoppers through fast performance and streamlined navigation. A focus on a user-friendly site that delivers robust information to shoppers both quickly and easily has put HUMMER's site in the top spot three times in the past four waves of MWES," says Steve Witten, the executive director of marketing/media research at J.D. Power and Associates.
"Traditional point-and-click Web site navigation is changing as a growing number of shoppers use search engines to link directly to automotive manufacturer model pages rather than the home pages," said Witten. "As a result, manufacturer vehicle model pages are beginning to contain more functionality than ever before. Lincoln's Web site, in particular, combines rich content on its model pages with fast, clear navigation."

Lexus To Debut 'High-Efficiency' Hybrid

Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, will introduce a more fuel-efficient hybrid in 2008 to lure affluent buyers of models such as the popular Prius, the best-selling hybrid in America.
"There is a whole section of the population that wants something different, and that's high-efficiency," said Lexus General Manager Mark Templin in an interview at NAIAS. "It's a supplemental strategy to what we've done before."
"More than a third of the 181,221 Prius buyers last year had annual income of more than $100,000. Half of those people made over $150,000 a year and 24% of those people have a luxury car in their household fleet," he added. "We think there is part of the market that everybody is missing."
The automaker intends to unveil the hybrid-only model at the Detroit Auto Show next year. "The decision to go with a hybrid-only Lexus was supported by sales data on the Toyota Prius," Templin said. "In 2007, 62,000 Prius buyers, or about one-third of all Prius customers, had annual incomes of more than $100,000. We think there's an untapped segment of the market."
But Templin did not go into details regarding the upcoming hybrid.
"If I sell 1,000 more cars this year, I'd be happy," Templin said in an interview with Freep.com. "The Lexus IS F, a 416-horsepower V8 sedan due out soon, should attract driving enthusiasts but not necessarily large volumes."
The maker of Lexus radiator is absorbed in producing supercars. At this year's NAIAS, it is displaying the LF-A topless roadster equipped with a 5.0-liter V10 that generates 500-plus hp. "A coupe version of the LF-A has been tested at racetracks around the world," Templin added. "The response so far has been positive, but a decision has not been made on production."
But competition is expected to grow even hotter. Luxury rivals are expected to unveil their cutting-edge products. GM, this year, will offer a hybrid 2009 Cadillac Escalade SUV. The Detroit automaker said it may offer gasoline- electric versions across the Cadillac line, reported Bloomberg.
Other powerful rivals include Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 SUV hybrids. Mercedes-Benz is also working on a turbocharged hybrid S-Class sedan with a diesel engine in place of gasoline.
I was thinking of having a timely Mazda radiator buy and I wonder, should I be entertaining thoughts about replacing my car instead?
Nissan Launches 2008 Serena
The Japanese automaker Nissan rolls out the all new 2008 Serena minivan model in its home market. Nissan aims to continue the Serena's achievement as the best selling minivan model in the Japanese market for the first eleven months of 2007.
The 2008 Nissan Serena is now available in all Nissan dealerships all over Japan carrying a base manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) from 2,131,500 to 2,709,000 Yen or about $18,665 to $23,722 USD.

Opel Releases the 2008 Zafira
General Motors Corp's Opel division now rolls out the 2008 Zafira model in the European market. According to the automaker, the new 2008 Opel Zafira comes with an attractive look and a wide range of in-car technologies, but with no additional cost. Right. The 2008 model will have the same base manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) like the previous model.
The all new 2008 Opel Zafira will goes on sale equipped with three powertrain options for customers. The new 1.6 ECOTEC engine is capable of pumping out 85 kW (115 hp). Customers can also choose between the two diesel variants, which include a 1.7-liter CDTI with 81 kW/110 hp and 1.7-liter CDTI with 92 kW/125 hp.
Other highlights of the all new 2008 Opel Zafira include additional sporty design accents, improved interior, and the trademark variable Flex7 seating system. These are only few of the complete features of the 2008 Opel Zafira.
The vehicle will have a starting MSRP of 23,720 Euros or about $34,263 USD.
PEMA Says, Have a Safe Drive this Holiday
As the holiday season progresses, the whole country experiences harsh cold weather condition that includes freezing rain and icy roads. In addition, heavy winds also cause trees and power lines to fall down and create hampers on the roadways.
That is why the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) suggests that motorists should be careful when driving during cold and rainy weather conditions. According to Robert P. French, PEMA Director: "Be especially careful when driving at night and watch for black ice, downed wires or debris in the roadway. If possible, turn around to avoid such obstructions. Do not try to move fallen power lines yourself."
In addition, PEMA also recommends some tips for home owners regarding the use of alternative heating and lighting devices.
- Keep all people and flammable materials away from fire places and wood stoves.
- Never use an oven or gas range to heat your home
- Open flues before using the fireplace
- Kerosene heaters must never be fueled inside the home or garage
- Fuel-burning appliances, such as gas, wood, or kerosene, can emit dangerous levels of CO. Install at least one CO alarm to protect sleeping areas.
- Candle use presents an increasingly dangerous fire hazard. Use flashlights for emergency lighting.
- Do not permit children to keep or use candles in their rooms
- Residents who are without power are urged to call their electric utility to report their outage and not 9-1-1

BMX X6 To Debut in Detroit

BMW AG has announced what they got in store for auto enthusiasts around the world at the upcoming 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit this January. The German automaker will make 2008 NAIAS as the world debut of its
X6 Sports Activity Coupe. According to BMW, the X6 will be the first Sports Activity Coupe model in the automotive market. The vehicle will feature two powertrain variants - the xDrive50i and the xDrive35i.
The xDrive50i features a 4.4-liter V8 engine that is capable of pumping out 400 hp and pulls out a stunning 450 lb. ft. amount of peak torque. In the other hand, the xDrive35i offers more fuel efficiency with its 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that delivers 300 hp and generates 300 lb. ft. of torque. These figures can be obtained in powerful engine speeds from 1,800 up top 4,500 rpm. Both engines are also equipped with Twin Turbo and direct injection systems.
The main highlight of the BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe that will be presented at the 2008 NAIAS includes the innovative Dynamic Performance Control as a standard feature. This feature allows the X6 to have a variable distribution of drive forces between the rear wheels. This system passively assists the driver to steer and helps to maintain the vehicle's stability.
BMW said the other details of the X6 Sports Activity Coupe will be released during the show, so you better watch out for it. You can also try to upgrade your Acura CL distributor cap while waiting.
Dodge Introduces the Tuned Out Guy
Chrysler LLC's Dodge brand has recently announced the winners of their "Are You Tuned Out?" contest. Zach Madrid from Colorado was selected as the sole winner of this interesting contest that recognizes an individual that is dedicated in vehicles customization and personalization. According to a survey conducted by Dodge in conjunction with Ipsos Public Affairs, 63% of men are obsessed in tuning up their vehicle models including cars and trucks.
Zach Madrid was nominated by his fiancee Tricia Champagne for tuning up his Dodge Caliber SRT4. Madrid commented: 'The Dodge Caliber SRT4 is awesome. I can't believe I'm going to have a brand new one sitting in my driveway. I never thought when Tricia nominated me that I would end up winning the 'Are You Tuned Out?' contest! I couldn't have asked for a better wedding present or a better fiancee!"

Mazda CX-9: Finalist for 2008 NATOY
Mazda's North American division has recently announced that the CX-9 was one of the finalists of the 2008 North American Truck of the Year (NATOY). Based on the evaluation of NATOY jurors, the Mazda CX-9 was selected from the 13 contenders for the award. Selection is based on certain categories including design, safety, fuel economy, handling, performance, comfort, driver satisfaction and affordability.
Jim O'Sullivan, President and CEO of Mazda North American Operations said:

J.D. Power Tackles on Internet Behavior
According to the recent 2007 Power Auto Online Media Study-Winter conducted by .D. Power and Associates, auto consumers who visit larger video sharing web sites continues to grow and it has been an effective way to promote vehicle models in each segment.
J.D. Power and Associates has been conducting the Power Auto Online Media Study for two years now. The study focuses on the internet usage of automotive consumers and the behavior of new car buyers visiting video sharing websites as their references.
Arianne Walker, director of marketing and media research at J.D. Power and Associates commented: "A relatively small number of adults -- roughly 6 percent of the population -- purchase a new vehicle each year, so it is particularly important to carefully target automotive advertising to mediums that will provide the best balance of audience reach and penetration. More new-vehicle buyers are viewing video on the Web, and advertisers could benefit from staying on top of this growing trend."
Significant findings include:
- 54% report going online to view video
- YouTube has the largest reach among new-vehicle buyers (29%)
- The compact CUV market is one of the fastest-growing segments in the automotive industry
- 58% of compact premium CUV buyers say they are willing to pay more to obtain an environmentally friendly vehicle.
- Buyers of large premium sporty vehicles are more than two times more likely to visit an automotive blog Web site
Walker concluded: "Finding ways to closely and efficiently target consumers can be extremely beneficial to automakers, particularly when vehicle segments experiencing considerable growth in sales are pinpointed. In this instance, smaller video-sharing sites attract a higher concentration of compact CUV buyers, which can make such sites more effective in targeting these buyers with relevant automotive advertising."
Well, I think video sharing web sites not only promotes vehicle models but also auto parts and accessories like Acura Integra thermostat.
Aston Martin DBS in BOND 22

British automaker Aston Martin has recently announced that the DBS model will once again hit the big screen with its inception in the upcoming James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig. The movie will be entitled BOND 22 and will be produced by Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli under EON Productions.
According to Dr Ulrich Bez: “Aston Martin is proud of our long association with James Bond. The DBS has its own unique character which equals that of James Bond. It is explosive power in a black tie. It is the perfect car for James Bond as it delivers the complete driving experience and bridges the gap between our road and track cars – the DB9 and DBR9. It is equally at home on a twisting mountain circuit as on the open road and we are all very excited at the prospect of seeing it on the big screen again.”
Directed by Marc Forster (Monster Ball, The Kite Runner, Stranger Than Fiction), the fill will hit theaters all over the world starting in November 2008. This will be the second time where the Aston Martin DBS was featured in a movie. We should watch out for this film next year. Mustang Will Get A Glass Roof in 2008

Next year, Ford Motor Company will add a Glass Roof Mustang on its lineup to celebrating the 45th anniversary of America’s favorite muscle car - the Ford Mustang. According to Ford, launching a 2009 Mustang model with glass roof will answer the needs of customers who wanted for more natural light when driving and provide third roof option for customers.
"Mustang is an icon in our product lineup, and we are committed to keeping Mustang news fresh every year. As the automotive landscape becomes increasingly competitive, features such as a panoramic glass roof will help differentiate our products from the competition." said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president, Global Product Development.
Paul Randle, chief nameplate engineer also commented: "Quality is a continuous process. The whole team is passionate about it, which results in our paying attention to the smallest details. Our owners have high expectations, and we always want to meet them – with strong features like this new roof option, quality and performance."
The Ford Glass Roof Mustang option will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,995. Features include:
- less expensive option that a convertible model
- made of tinted privacy glass to reduce infrared rays and vehicle cool-down time by 50 percent
- equipped with a built in manual roller blind that allows owners to further control exposure on the sun
- reduces solar light transmittance to protect interior fabric material

Toyota Rolls Out the 2008 Sequoia

Toyota Motor Sales USA now releases the new model that will enter the full size sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. The all new 2008 Toyota Sequoia will go on sale later this December carrying a base manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) ranging from $34,150 up to $55,600. The new Toyota Sequoia will be available in 4x2 or 4x4 drive train configurations with three model trim variants including SR5, Limited, and the all new Platinum model. A standard 4.7-liter engine is under the hood of all 2008 Sequoia models, but customers can also choose the monstrous 5.7-liter DOHC V8 engine that pumps out horsepower and 401 lbs. ft. of torque, combined with a six-speed automatic transmission.

J.D. Power Releases 2008 Avoider Study
A recent study about the purchasing behavior of the younger and older consumers released by J.D. Power and Associates is quite interesting. Now on its 5th year, the 2007 Avoider Study shows that younger customers prefer imported car models than domestic models, while older consumers are more likely to purchase new domestic vehicles.
Jon Osborn, research director at J.D. Power and Associates said:
"Many buyers continue to have unfavorable impressions of domestic models due to concerns about quality, reliability and depreciation issues, even though the quality of many of these domestic products is on par with or exceeds that of their import counterparts. Domestic manufacturers need to get this message out in front of younger buyers and convince them to put their models on their shopping list."
Significant findings of the 2007 Avoider Study include:
- The North Central region of the United States contains the highest proportion (41%) of domestic vehicle buyers
- The Northeast and the West regions contain the highest proportions of buyers of import vehicles
- Gas mileage is the most frequently mentioned reason for purchasing a vehicle, while it remains the seventh most frequently cited reason for avoiding a particular vehicle model.
- Buyers are making avoidance decisions based on consumer-generated information found on the Internet, with consumer reviews most often cited as a source leading to avoidance.
- Younger buyers are more apt to indicate gas mileage as a reason for purchasing, compared with their older counterparts
Osborn concluded: "As an example, the HUMMER H3 is the most-avoided model in its segment, with 21 percent of buyers saying that they would not consider buying this model and many citing poor gas mileage as a reason. However, EPA fuel economy estimates for the HUMMER H3 are very similar to those of other midsize utility vehicles, such as the Jeep Commander and Chrysler Aspen, which have much lower rates of avoidance. The perception that the HUMMER model gets worse gas mileage than other comparable models may be strongly influencing consumer decisions to exclude it from consideration -- especially since gas prices have remained high. Changing customer perceptions by educating buyers about this model's fuel efficiency performance may help to lower its avoidance rates."
I think younger consumers will prefer Acura CL models equipped with Acura CL water pump on their next purchase.
GM opened first design studio in India
India has such a blooming auto industry and leading automakers are continuously venturing into the country for expansion. Last Thursday, General Motors opened its first design studio in India attempting to take the lead in the Indian auto market.
The studio of the world's largest automaker was built in Bangalore, a city at the south of the Indian state. According to the automaker, the studio caters for the company's research and development operations that will contribute to the mid-cycle enhancement of existing models and the advanced design of future products.
In a statement,head of India operations for GM Karl Slym said that the new studio will give the automaker the ability to design vehicles in India for India to meet the unique needs of its customers across the country.
Initially, GM will hire about 60 employees for their new studio. For years, GM had tried to put in little steps to get inside the auto market of India. The new facility is only a proof that GM had successfully penetrated Ghandi's land.
From January until July of this year, car sales of GM in India boosted by 250 percent compared to their sales for the same period in 2006. The achievement of GM in their sales was made despite spiking increase in interest rates.
This year, India's compact car segment was well fed by GM. Known for going after affordable and quality vehicles, GM offered the Indians the affordable Chevrolet Spark targeting young consumers and the Chevrolet Aveo U-VA, GM's fresh luxury hatchback.
Before, GM was creating more sedans than compact vehicles, which dominates the Indian car market.
Since its introduction, the Chevy Spark brought GM good cash and the vehicle is motivating the automaker to bring India more new vehicles of its kind. At present, GM's assembly plant in Halol in western India is producing five Chevrolet models, GM’s flagship brand. In 2008, another GM plant will start car production that had cost the automaker to make huge investments.
Slym even added that the opening of the GM India design studio is an important step in the growth of GM in this crucial market, referring to India.

China now homes cleaner cars
Cheap ways to create environment friendly cars had been ventured by almost all automakers and they are bringing their products to the People’s Republic of China. At the Challenge Bibendum held in Shanghai recently, leading auto companies introduced their most advanced green vehicles to combat global warming and fluttering fuel prices.

Tricks and Trips for Cold Months Driving
Snowfall is fiercely anticipated by skiers and snowboarders but I doubt if motorists are that happy with it. However, if drivers know the right techniques and their cars are with appropriate winter driving equipment, motorists can also find fun during the cold winter months. Here are some driving tips:
- Change to winter tires in good time. The specific rubber composition and special profile with perforations ensure a shorter braking distance when driving in snow or just generally in cold weather. Also check the windshield wipers and water jets (as well as the battery, lights and anti-freeze, of course).
- As a rule, avoid abrupt braking, gear changes and steering maneuvers on snow-covered roads. Instead, drive slower, more defensively and always with enough braking distance; let the clutch out slowly when starting off to avoid wheel spin. Selecting the winter program on automatic transmissions makes driving off easier.
- A test with your brakes (Acura brakes) are good replacements) when first setting off helps to get a feel for the road conditions (but check in the rear-view mirror first)
- Drive particularly carefully on bridges and roads that are shadowed (in the forest, etc.); even if the road surface around them is already free of snow and ice, they can be treacherously slick in the winter even when temperatures are above freezing
- In alpine ski resorts, so much snow can fall overnight that even the best winter tires aren't enough. In this situation, snow chains are the answer. The important points to remember are to fit the chains before beginning an uphill drive, and remove them as soon as the road is clear of snow otherwise the chains will wear out quickly and drastically reduce driving safety. Also important to note is that experts recommend to practice fitting snow chains at least once before needing to do it for real
- Should the car start to swerve on a snow-covered road, do not brake suddenly. Instead, engage the clutch (this gives the wheels more cornering force), counter steer and brake lightly, if needed
- Snow on the car or an iced windshield needs to be completely cleared before setting off. By using the air conditioner in the winter, the driver can also prevent the windshield from fogging up
- Clear the snow from the car's roof, otherwise it could slide forward when the car brakes and obscure the driver's visibility.

Five New Inductees to the Automotive Hall of Fame
Last October 16, at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, Michigan, five persons have been inducted in the Automotive Hall of Fame. The five individuals represent automotive racing, design, manufacturing and management. From among 50 candidates, they were chosen by a special panel through special criteria. To be an inductee, one must have achieved greatness through inspiration, vision and hard work.

A.J. Foyt (1935 - ) A.J. Foyt, Jr. is one of the most accomplished men to ever drive a race car. His Indy car driving records remain intact despite being out of the cockpit for over 10 years. During his fabled four-decade career, Foyt won 12 national titles and 172 major races, including wins in NASCAR, USAC stock cars, midgets, sprints, IMSA sports cars and of course, LeMans. Coincidentally, Foyt shares inductee honors with Dan Gurney, his partner in the 24-Hours of LeMans in 1967. As a team owner, Foyt has won the national Indy car title five times.
Dan Gurney (1931 - ) Dan Gurney has had 3 very successful careers: racing driver, racecar manufacturer and inventor, and team owner. Gurney's racing career began in 1955 and spanned 15 years. By the time he retired in 1970, he had raced in 312 events in 20 countries with 51 different makes of cars winning 51 races and finishing on the podium an additional 47 times. Gurney has won 7 Formula One races, 7 Indy Car races, and 5 NASCAR Winston Cup stockcar races. Additionally he captured wins in Trans-Am, Can-Am and Sports Car races including the endurance classics at the Nurburgring, Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans.
Charles B. King (1869 to 1957) Considered by his peers to be the most technically capable of the automotive pioneers, King excelled as an engineer, artist, musician, poet, architect, and inventor. King received a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Cornell University, and in 1891 moved to Detroit. King drove the first car ever seen on the streets of Detroit, a car of his own design. King would later receive a medal from the national Chamber of Commerce honoring him as "one of the main contributors to the mechanical development of the automobile." Kind died in 1957 leaving a legacy of some 70 patents, 40 of which were automotive related.
Sergio Pininfarina (1926 - ) Sergio Pininfarina began his career with the family firm, Carrozzeria Pinin Farina, in 1950 after graduating in mechanical engineering from the Polytechnic of Torino. In 1960, he was named General Manager, and in 1966, upon the death of his father, was named Chairman of the company. In 2006 he became Honorary Chairman. During his fifty-plus years of work, the Pininfarina Group has enjoyed steady growth in both technical and production development. Production units increased more than 100 times from 524 to more than 53,000; the number of employees more than quintupled from 560 to 3000. Under his guidance, the Pininfarina Group designed many of the world's most beautiful and sought-after automobiles.
Shoichiro Toyoda (1925 - ) Shoichiro Toyoda began his career with Toyota (makes original Lexus power steering pump) in 1952 upon graduation from Nagoya University with a degree in engineering and later earned an engineering doctorate. Dr. Toyoda became managing director at Toyota in 1961. After serving in a variety of managerial positions, Dr. Toyoda assumed the presidency of the newly integrated Toyota Motor Corporation in 1982, upon the merger of the sales and production organizations. He later served as chairman from 1992 to 1999. Dr. Toyoda became honorary chairman of Toyota in 1999. Automotive technology, quality control and factory management were primary emphases for Dr. Toyoda throughout his career, and he received the Deming Prize in 1980 for his contributions to quality control. He is universally recognized as the leader of Toyota's quality, global expansion and environmental initiatives.
Ford will not kill Mercury
Almost all American are struggling for profitability this year after their combined multi-billion dollar losses in 2006. Ford's Mercury division is one of the greatly affected brands relating to the company's financial instability that it was predicted to have no future.
In a meeting with reporters, Ford's CEO Allan Mullaly responded to the question of whether their Mercury brand has a future. The CEO said that it is absolute. The brand is doing well. They have a great set of products in Mercury. It is a very nice complement to the Ford products said the CEO and that they have a good lineup in Ford, Lincoln and Mercury.
Other than Mullaly, executives from Ford have not released their comments about the future products for the struggling division. Aside from Milan sedan hybrid version due for launching next summer, there are no other product line-up for the Mercury brand.
Mercury has not brought profit to Ford in the last few years. Last year, having 180, 848 vehicle sales, it was the lowest Mercury ever sold since 1960. From 146,418 last year for the first nine month period, Mercury sales are down by 11 percent to 129,742 until September.
The Mercury is a great product line, said Mullaly and the dealers are very happy with it. Sales are spectacular for Lincoln Mercury and in some areas, Lincoln Mercury has been growing faster than Ford announced the CEO.
Ford commented on other topics concerning his company.
Mulally said he expects Jim Farley to have an immediate impact once he settles in as Ford's group vice president of marketing and communications. Mulally wooed Farley from Toyota, where he was general manager of the Lexus Division.
Mr. Farley is a proven auto executive Mullaly said. For him, Farley is very experienced in marketing and sales and especially in getting the word out. Mullaly predicts Farley to be of great help to Ford Motors.
Ford is expecting big things from the revamped Focus. Mulally said the new compact will: Define Ford going forward, arrest Ford's market share decline and help position Ford for profitable growth.
Mullaly claimed that the Focus is the finest small vehicle Ford has ever produced, he told a crowd of assembly line workers at the company's Wayne stamping and assembly plant, where the car is built.
After General Motors and Chrysler LLC (maker of Jeep oxygen sensor), Ford is also set for labor bargaining with the United Auto Workers union after the expiration of the company's contract with the union. Compared to the other two automakers, negotiation with Ford is expected to become smooth tracing that the UAW Chief, Ron Gettelfinger had once been a Ford employee.
Chevrolets bound for Uzbekistan
American top automaker, General Motors announced last Tuesday that they created a deal with UzAvtosanoat to create and sell Chevrolet vehicles in Uzbekistan, a Central Asian country, formerly a part of the Soviet Union. The Uzbekistan production of GM and sales is under its European division. The venture with UzAvtosanoat will be called GM Uzbekistan, part of expansion sales for GM and also Chevrolet in Eastern Europe and Asia.
President of General Motors Europe Carl-Peter Forster said that Chevrolet has become the fastest growing brand in Europe, demonstrating its strong appeal especially in the opportunity markets of Eastern Europe and the start of operations in Uzbekistan and the launch of a series of new Chevrolet models will help them continue their rapid growth.
Chevrolet sales in Europe had an increase of 32 percent selling 328,000 units in September. With the 450,000 sales target of GM with a 30 percent increase from 2006 for Chevrolet this year, it seems like GM Europe will hit the eye of the bull.
The terms of the venture entails GM to hold 20 percent of the equity stake with an increasing option in the future. GM will be the one to provide the technology, expertise in manufacturing and training for the joint venture. GM as it is holding major operation responsibilities, some GM officials will be holding key positions in the venture.
President and CEO of GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Michael Grimaldi said that they are are very pleased to join forces with their reliable manufacturing partner in Uzbekistan. TheDemand is high around the world for the new Chevrolet models they build in Korea. The new joint venture means they will have added manufacturing capacity to assist us in meeting the growing demand for our cars in Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
The manufacturing plant of GM in Uzbekistan has a total manufacturing capacity of 25,000 vehicles located in Asaka, Andijan Province, 350km away from Tashkent, the Uzbek capital. With the venture, the plant will be used fully to produce Chevrolets specifically the Chevrolet Captiva, Epica and the Tacuma which will be the first three Chevrolets to be produced in Uzbekistan.
The Prime Minister of Uzbekistan said that the entry into the General Motors family gives access to a modern model line and modern automobile technologies.
He also said that Quality improvement, growth of production and consumer requirements satisfaction in Uzbekistan and in other countries, where Uzbek cars rightly deserved popularity and recognition, these are key points to which the new joint venture will focus on.
The newly produced Chevrolet models will be exhibited and sold in seven GM showrooms in Tashkent and other big cities in Uzbekistan. The venture expects that Chevrolet will be a great hit in the central Asian country that the seven showrooms is expected to grow significantly to 60 showrooms by the end of 2008.
Before its scheduled production of the Chevrolet models, the plant is presently producing Daewoo Matiz, Nexia and Damas which is sold in the domestic Uzbek markets and other neighboring markets. These models will be lined up with the Chevrolets as soon as the plant starts its production.
ForUlugbek Rozukulov, the Chairman of Board Uzavtosanoat SC, the newly created enterprise will increase production volumes to 250 thousand cars per year. Also according to him, besides, along with production of new models, they are planning to implement a number of localization projects of KD parts in Uzbekistan, which also will contribute to the development of the industry.
The division of GM in Europe is in fierce competition with other European automakers like BMW (makes BMW 325ci parts), Volkswagen, Daimler AG, Renault and the others. Ford Motor Co. also has its Europe division.
Just until Wednesday for Chrysler
Until Wednesday, if representatives from Chrysler and the United Auto Workers have not settled on a new contract, the union threatened a strike for almost 49,000 hourly-based employees.
According to Chrysler spokesperson Michele Tinson, the union set the deadline on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
"We've received official UAW notification," Tinson said via e-mail.
In a copy posted in the Wall Street Journal, the UAW chief's statement on Monday for local union leaders was that Chrysler has "failed to make an offer that adequately addresses the needs of our membership." However, negotiations continued on the evening of the same day.
The notice from the UAW arrived a week after the union and Chrysler LLC had been on intensive concessions. The strike will be due to a series of plant shut downs made by the newly private automaker, controlled by Cerberus Capital Management. The closing of facilities is part of the automaker's restructuring program in its goal to achieve profitability since the company had long been having poor sales.
This week, five plants of Chrysler had been idled, and according to people familiar with Chrysler's plan, the automaker had also scheduled shutting down of its plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
According local UAW leaders, they are going to send their members to picket lines like what the union did with GM if they are signaled to by the UAW negotiators.
"We are right on time with everything and we are ready to go," UAW Local 1268 President Tom Littlejohn told Reuters. "All we have to do is pull the trigger."
Littlejohn's local represents 3,600 Chrysler (makes original Dodge clutch kits) workers at a plant in Belvidere III that the company had raised as an example of its transition to a more flexible and lower-cost manufacturing strategy.
"We have no comment on negotiations at this time," UAW spokesman Roger Kerson said in an e-mail this morning.

According to rumors, with Lexus IS's failure to match the mighty BMW 3 series of which the BMW 320 made of BMW 320 parts is one, Toyota's luxury division had fallen enough that they stood up with the Lexus IS F, not to match the 3 series once again but the more luxurious, sophisticated and superb performing BMW M3. However, officials from Lexus deny these speculations.

Is Toyota Really Green?
Although the Toyota Prius had been a hit for environmental conscious drivers, groups of environmentalists now question whether the Japanese automaker responsible for the Prius is really a friend to Mother Nature.
Because Toyota, together with General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC is opposing the strict fuel economy standards still pending in Congress, the Natural Resources Defense Council is leading the environmental groups is challenging the automakers in their stand on the standard.
For the past two weeks, emails and faxes had been sent to Toyota by almost 8,300 NRDC activists asking the company to support the Senate Energy bill with a 35-mile-per-gallon by 2020 provision.
Toyota is also being urged by other environmental groups like the Union of Concerned Scientists and the National Environmental Trust for the company to sustain a more modest approach on the CAFÉ standards requiring 32-35 mpg by the year 2022.
"They have a green halo, justifiably, and yet unbeknownst to their customers they've joined forces with the Detroit Three to argue against greener standards," said Deron Lovaas, the vehicles campaign director for NRDC.
Toyota's stand on the senate bill is brought about by the company's fear that it would hurt the auto industry and emphasized that the alternative will still raise the standards up to 40 percent and the automakers need more time to meet the requirement. The Japan based company said that they will make responses to the emails and faxes sent to them.
"For the first time, the industry has actually come together for a fuel economy increase, and everyone is pulling together in the same direction," Toyota spokeswoman Martha Voss said Wednesday.
"Toyota is working very hard behind the scenes to achieve the best standards possible, not only for the whole industry, but to meet the energy and environmental goals that we all share."
Toyota with Honda and other Japanese automakers had been the pioneers of fuel-efficient and environmental-friendly vehicles highlighting its hybrid technology. Aside from the hybrid vehicle of all time, the Prius, Toyota is on its way of producing hybrid versions of almost all its vehicles including the Camry (with Toyota Camry parts) and the models from its luxury division, the Lexus.
The company's credibility of producing greener vehicles is being questioned by people from the environmental society of whom some are driving the Prius.
"They market every night the Prius and the Toyota Camry -- we're the green car, huh? Then watch the football games, and they’re marketing the Toyota Tundra -- like the biggest vehicle ever made," Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., a Camry hybrid owner, said Wednesday in a speech at an environmental conference.
"We're actually going to name the vehicle the Tundra, after the thing that's being destroyed in Alaska," he said. "How ironic."

Canadian Auto Workers, back to Work
Yesterday, beginning with the evening shift, the workers at General Motor’s plants in Oshawa returned to their jobs as GM and United Auto Workers reached a tentative deal.
Two plants where almost 5,600 Canadian workers are employed had been shut last Tuesday relative to the on-going strike of the 73,000 workers in strike against GM.
The dispute between GM and the UAW was settled in early Wednesday in Detroit putting and end to the three day strike.
