A Quick Overview Of Online Poker SNG Tournaments
A Quick Overview Of Online Poker SNG Tournaments
by Craig Edwards
Sit N Go poker tourneys are very exciting. Strategy is key. Unless you have a monster hand that you will go all the way with, you want to try to keep the pots small. Mid pairs are a good case in point. From under the gun, or even 2nd or 3rd to act, it’s very easy to get punished.
In other poker games, you might do very well by raising with weak pocket pairs (22-88). This can create some deception to set yourself up with a huge win. It’s safer with these hands to limp or call small raises. You will only hit your set one in eight times, so it’s better to be careful.
With the blinds are getting big you need to get your share of steals. Taking down the blinds is essential. It becomes a battle of nerves as you play weaker hands to keep winning the blinds. If you just keep folding, your stack will dwindle down to a few useless chips.
As the blinds get large, or are are big relative to your own stack, you need to consider going all in. If you think it might work out better to raise, that is fine providing you are going to push all in post flop. You have to be willing to risk it all to give yourself a chance to win.
When players are folding, you can go all in with more hands expecting to get no callers. How many chips you’re up against is important also. The big (has enough chips to risk) and small (desperate and looking for a spot) stacks will call more often. The middle sized stack folds more, protecting their chips.
When you’re on the bubble, your play is determined a lot by stack sizes. For example, you might push all in to try to knock out a short stack. You could fold the same hand pre-flop to the big stack to save chips also. Naturally, you would have to fold to a big raise.
Now is when you look to go all in, but don’t think only about your cards when deciding. Anything is playable sometimes, especially if your stack will damage the others enough to scare them. When betting at a big stack you need better cards as you will get called more frequently.
When you have the chip lead, people will fear you and you should take their blinds often. The players with mid sized stacks are easy prey. They fear getting eliminated before the short stack goes out.
This is the hardest position to be in, especially on the bubble. The big stack is always a threat to knock you out, and the short stack is ready to take a risk. So, you need better starting hands to get involved. Being the middle stack on the bubble is very tricky.
So, here is a list of ideas to get you started. Each one of these topics is a story in itself. Learn as much as you can about how you want to play in each situation and develop your own style to beat the SNG games. GO win some tournaments.
So these are most of the basics specifically for the SNG games. You could write an entire article on each of these ideas. Develop your knowledge and skills in these areas, and maybe you will be beating the Sit N Gos. Happy hunting.

Knowing When To Check
Internet Poker
It is important in any poker game to understand the hand strengths and how they can work for you. Remember, however, that even though poker is a game of chance, there are many skills you can learn and continue to sharpen that will help you make decisions that will improve your game and may even help increase your odds.
Understanding the rules of poker is essential to playing a good game. Though the rules vary from one type of poker game to another, many of the concepts remain the same, i.e. a bad hand is a bad hand no matter which game you play.
Though the game of poker depends on odds, there are many techniques you can employ to help improve your game. Knowing when to fold, raise, and check are important to your success as a poker player.
In poker, the term "check" is referred to when a player calls the current bet of zero. The player will decline making a bet, which indicates that he or she does not wish to open, but would like to keep the cards and, therefore, retains the right to call or raise later in the same round if another player opens.
A player who has a live blind and chooses not to take advantage of his or her right to raise to check his or her option. This can be signified the same way.
There are different plays where a check may be used. One such play is called sandbagging. Otherwise known as "slow play", sandbagging is a deceptive play in poker that is roughly the opposite of bluffing: betting weakly with a strong holding rather than betting strongly with a weak one.
The check-raise is an example of such a play. This can involve a check or call with a hand you might otherwise raise with in order to lure other players into the pot who may be likely to fold to a raise or to try and encourage them to bet more strongly than they would if you had bet or raised.
Such a play can be very dangerous because it can sacrifice the protection a bet or raise would give you, while risking losing the pot-building value of a bet if your opponents check as well.
It can, however, be profitable to do this under certain circumstances that include the following three things.
If the hand you are playing is so strong protection isn't necessary, this play can work for you. Another situation where this might work is where an opponent is likely to bet when you do not. A third circumstance where this can be profitable for you is when opponents are likely to fold or call if you bet.
